  4.     H.L. Mencken, the iconoclastic journalist who delighted in
  5. debunking the "booboisie," is being debunked himself. An
  6. abridged version of his diaries will arrive in bookstores this
  7. month. In journal entries written between 1930 and 1948, Mencken
  8. emerges as a hypochondriac with an anti-Semitic streak. In one
  9. passage he noted that a house on his street had been bought by
  10. "some Jews ... with various ratty tenants." In a segment that
  11. the editor omitted, Mencken referred to two Baltimore
  12. businessmen as "dreadful kikes."

  14.     Mencken ordered that the diaries be sealed for 25 years
  15. after his death, which occurred in 1956, and thereafter be made
  16. available to students only. But in 1985 the Maryland Attorney
  17. General ruled the restriction not legally binding. Mencken would
  18. probably have put down controversy over the diaries to what he
  19. called "the virulence of the national appetite for bogus
  20. revelation." But admirers of Mencken's wit may now find it
  21. harder to laugh with him.
